Friday Night Flicks: Smith Settle Printing and Bookbinding

David and I belong to the Folio Society (a dangerous thing for bibliophiles) which publishes, among other things, beautiful limited edition books with leather covers and hinges, gold lettering, marbled endpapers, etcetera. These books are produced in a commercial bindery at a speed I would have not thought possible, even allowing for the speed-cutting of the following video. I note that some of the steps that instruction books say “must be done” using specific (frequently very expensive) binding equipment, are done in this bindery freehand with small hand tools.

While not a detailed instruction video, the film gives a nice overview of production methods.

Happy Weekend!

About Byopia Press

I have been working in the book arts field for more than twenty years, and operating Byopia Press with my husband David since the late 1990s. I began producing artist's books and altered books in 2004.
