Friday Night Flicks: Eddy Izzard on Computers

It has been one of those weeks: I was cleaning up some email backlog on Monday morning and, when I attempted to delete a small group of files from my trash folder, my mail program started to delete everything from everywhere. I instantly realised (from the number of files the program said it was processing) that something was wrong and aborted. Unfortunately the program had been deleting from most recent backwards, so the most critical stuff —like an article I was supposed to be copy editing/proof reading— had disappeared.

Well, not disappeared, merely moved. For some reason David (my brilliant tech support) found them all (including ones that I thought I had previously deleted or filed) in a folder labelled High Priority Mail. The folder had not been there previously.

Everything seemed to be fine, and I completed a first run-through of the article and sent it off to the editor.

Yesterday morning I went to start the clean-up of my e-mail files, and discovered that they had disappeared again.

It’s OK. David found them (well, most of them) again —I am not sure where they were this time— and they have been moved to a folder labelled ‘rescued’. I actually went and double-checked just now. They’re still there.

So David spent a lot of time on my computer this week, and I got quite a lot of knitting done. (Apparently the loss of huge numbers of emails affects one’s ability to count properly while knitting a lace pattern. I have decided to live with the resulting mistakes.)

I thought about re-posting the video compilation of people in movies thumping various bits of technology in an attempt to make them work, but I used that in October, so it was too recent.
