Byopia Press 2017 Advent Calendar: Day Thirteen and a woven paper star

Today’s star is called a Scandinavian woven star, or Advent star, or Finnish star, and probably other things.

I made this star using 12 strips of paper. Since I was working from memory, I managed to glut it together the wrong way round: the middle should curve outwards, not inwards. Let’s just say it’s a variation.

This one from Finnish blog remppahaikara is put together correctly and uses 20 strips.

I have also come up with a variation that starts with the first steps of the Froebel star. Follow the first eleven steps shown on Mathematische Basteleien. You should have something like this:

Trim the ends. I was using 1.25 cm (about 0.5″) strips, and I trimmed the ends to 5 cm (2″) beyond the central square.

Glue tips together as shown below.

Make a second unit like the first, then glue the two together with one unit rotated 45 degrees. Your combination star should look like this:
