Friday Night Flicks: Estudio Itálico

Hand lettering signs for businesses is an old tradition that carries on today. This video features the work of Estudio Itálico, and shows some of the ways members of the trade have adopted modern digital technology.

Have a look around your community this weekend and see if you can spot examples of  work by sign painters.

About Byopia Press

I have been working in the book arts field for more than twenty years, and operating Byopia Press with my husband David since the late 1990s. I began producing artist's books and altered books in 2004.

When I was in high school, I had a chance to learn to do this from a local sign painter (through the school’s employment placement program). Unfortunately, he didn’t want to teach girls and was something of an asshole to me. And the other guys on the crew were not friendly. Not mean, but nobody was going to waste their time with me. Still, I regret not finding a way to power through my insecurities, but I was a teenaged girl.

I am old enough to remember when everyone —including most women— thought that kind of behaviour towards females was completely acceptable. I had a rough enough time when I was studying commercial art. One teacher regularly referred to female students as ‘sluts’. Unfortunately, the attitude is still all too common.
