Print Run

I set aside the geometry series I was working on; I need to think about it more, and have moved on to another print series. It will be an edition of nine, with each print coloured differently using a combination of archival pigment print and coloured pencil. Here’s the black and white version which will be coloured in shades of gray.

I did a test of one of the prints before printing the edition.

Some of the colour is printed, some applied with pencil.

I tested some stitching, but didn’t like the look. The stitches would need to be much smaller and in finer thread to work with the graphic, and then wouldn’t ‘read’ effectively, so I have opted to stay with the stitching guides. The dots evoke both sewing patterns and postage stamps, which pleases me.

While waiting for prints to dry I played with an old stencil. (Do school children still use these?! I loved any excuse to put stencilled letters on books or maps.)

The upper left version was done with a mechanical pencil (2H lead) and the lower right with a fine tip Sharpie pen.

There will be more to look at next week.

Should I wear white cotton gloves to handle rare books? Short answer: NO! A Guest Blog Post by Cathleen A. Baker and Randy Silverman

I am delighted that Jeff Peachey has posted this article by Baker and Silverman. I now have further ammunition in my battle with gallery and library personnel who want to wear white cotton gloves when handling my work. My experience has shown that people are clumsy in cotton gloves, and the gloves themselves are often less clean than people’s fingers. Just wash your hands, folks!


My last two Sunday posts (here and here) were about flexagons I created after trying to reverse engineer a flexagon designed by Paula Beardell Kreig.

In other news:

We had a huge crop of these mushrooms. David could identify genus but not species, so we didn’t eat them.

I thought these might be the last kitchen sunflowers of the year, but some buds survived the frost on Thursday night so we may have one more bouquet. The beautiful squash was a gift from @graphics_and_gophers.


David and I had a big anniversary this week.

As I posted on Instagram:

It’s hard to believe I have been married to this clown for fifty years.
(How did that happen?!)

  1. I love the prints and the idea of drawing on them is brilliant. And it looks like you are sewing on one. Can I assume there will be more revealed soon? The mushroom is lovely, I love their shapes and colors. And congratulations to you and the clown. (-: Fifty years is a huge acheivement.

      Glad you like the print/coloured pencil combo. I am pleased with the results. I have decided not to sew on these but will keep the idea for future work.
      The photo of David as a clown is indicative of what it takes to survive fifty years together. A sense of humour is essential!
