Seasonal Activities and Some Recipes

The garden is being very productive this summer —we have had a decent amount of rain— so this week’s post is a celebration of food and flowers. Here’s the current kitchen bouquet. (Once they start blooming we have sunflowers in the kitchen until the autumn.)

There’s a little garden-related book news. I made a copy of The Language of Flowers for a neighbour who runs a flower farm. I included her logo on the last page spread

City Girl Flower Farm isn’t a U-Pick. Chantelle sells buckets of flowers regularly through the summer, and runs flower arranging classes and special events in the garden.

We grow a little bit of rhubarb in our garden. This year people have been giving away all kinds of fruit —did I mention that we have had rain?— so I have been freezing mixed containers for making crumbles/crisps/oatmeal bars next winter.

Our current favourite recipe is Strawberry/Rhubarb Crisp Bars from Smitten Kitchen. You can use any kind of fruit. The bowl below is a rhubarb/raspberry blend. (I use more oats than the recipe calls for instead of adding a bit more flour at the end as suggested, and I increase the fruit by up to a cup.)

We have also eaten our first potatoes of the summer — Goldrush/Netted Gems.

It was also cool enough for a few days to bake cookies. The ones below were made with rolled oats and sunflower seed butter following this recipe.

Plans for next week include harvesting grasses for making coiled baskets. Like everything else, the grass has done really well this year. I have had David avoid mowing a few patches of the tallest grass for me. Some of the tallest stalks come up to my shoulder!

    Wow! You’ve got everything in here! Braided grass, fruit chews, pretty flowers and dirty books! I might need some of those words if WordPress gives me much more aggro! 😉
